The Flower Garden, a fresh flower grower located in St. Anne, Ill., has chosen the MPS-ABC environmental certification program to benchmark its sustainability efforts. The Flower Garden grows more than 75 varieties outdoors, and grows hybrid lilies and starter plants in its greenhouses. The Flower Garden markets its products through various farmers’ markets in Illinois.
General manager Jim Barmann said the MPS-ABC environmental certification will help them understand how they can improve their sustainability each year.
Going forward, The Flower Garden will enter its use of energy, water, fertilizers and crop protection agents into the MPS website every four weeks. Four times a year the company will receive feedback from MPS in the form of charts, graphs and a report. Once The Flower Garden has completed its first year and the audit, they will receive an official MPS score that will designate them as MPS-A, MPS-B, or MPS-C.
“Our customers are happy to learn that we are working with an international certification program to help us learn how we can improve our practices and become even more sustainable” said Barmann. “Many of the farm market shoppers care that we are concerned about growing flowers sustainably and that we care about our environment.”
