Production

An extremely programmable crop, Calanday Sublime prefers increased attention during production when compared to Calanday or Calandiva. Optimal plant quality will be achieved with gradual, minimal changes in environment that are managed at the variety level. Threshold levels should be lowered when monitoring for pest or disease pressure. When applied to each stage of production, a philosophy of TLC ensures a top-quality finished product.

The Ten Commandments

When producing Calanday Sublime, keep in mind the “Ten Commandments,” an overview of fundamental tips for success.

Avoid sudden changes to the growing environment. Any necessary adjustments should be gradual.
After direct-sticking into moderately moist media, keep plants as dry as possible during the first 8-14 days of propagation (long-day period).
If a PGR application is needed during the long-day period, apply as a fine-nozzle spray rather than a drench.
Short-day flower initiation for Calanday Sublime must be a minimum of 14 hours of darkness for at least 7 weeks.
If you can read a newspaper under blackout, it is not dark enough.
Short-day interruption should be avoided at all costs (street lights, moonlight, etc.).
An initial PGR application at the beginning of the short-day period is essential. Reoccurring applications are highly recommended.
Stretching is primarily caused by humidity above 90% and/or a fluctuation of 30% or more.
Avoid overhead watering in general, but especially during short days. Never use cold water; always use water 55°F (13°C) or warmer.
Avoid use of oil-based liquid chemicals unless advised otherwise by a Dümmen Orange representative.
