All-America Selections has announced the winners of this year’s American Garden Award. In its second year, 18 gardens participated in this year’s American Garden Award program.
Rudbeckia ‘Denver Daisy’ from Ernst Benary of America was voted by the public as the grand prize winner. This variety produces 4- to 6-inch diameter reddish ringed golden flowers with a chocolate brown center. It was created and named in honor of Denver’s 150th anniversary.
Echinacea ‘Prairie Splendor’ from Syngenta Flowers was the 2nd place winner. This first year flowering perennial begins flowering in June and continues blooming until first frost. Its 3- to 3½-inch soft rose-purple flowers attract butterflies.
‘Purple Flash’ ornamental pepper from PanAmerican Seed took 3rd place winner. It can be used in containers and landscape plantings. It has nearly black leaves with flashes of purple. The drought-tolerant plants are topped with small, round, glossy black pepper fruits.
Last year’s grand prize winner was also a rudbeckia, ‘TigerEye Gold’ from Syngenta Flowers.
