Arizona governor signs immigration law

Arizona governor hopes new immigration law will enhance border security, but not lead to racial profiling, discrimination

During the signing of Senate Bill 1070 (Support Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act) on April 23, Ariz. Governor Jan Brewer said the new law is meant to increase security along the state’s border with Mexico. She said her support of enforcement of the law was against illegal immigration and against racial profiling. She said the bill requires that its implementation be in a manner that is consistent with federal immigration laws that protect all people’s civil rights and respect the privileges and immunities of U.S. citizens.
The law requires officials and agencies of the state and political subdivisions to fully comply with and assist in the enforcement of federal immigration laws. It also establishes crimes involving failure to complete an alien registration document, hiring or soliciting work under specified circumstances, and transporting or harboring unlawful aliens and their respective penalties.
The Arizona Republic reports numerous groups have already indicated they will fight implementation of the law. The law is set to take effect 90 days after the end of the current legislative session.
