The Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association (CSPMA) announces that this year’s harvest has significantly improved from last year’s season. Eastern Canada has witnessed higher-than-expected volumes, while in central Canada production is on or marginally above expectations. CSPMA says an earlier start, combined with favorable weather conditions, contributed to the results in both regions.
Western Canada’s volumes are slightly below expectations. Harvest has been impacted by a slower start and more adverse weather.
Overall, the outcome is an improvement in harvest volume compared to 2011, and it is anticipated that further adjustments may be made dependent on the ability to harvest in the fall season. CSPMA says this will be particularly true for western Canada.
