AeroFarms in Ithaca, N.Y., a provider of aeroponic technology, has acquired a first-of-its-kind instrument for testing the application of LED lighting to plants. The company is working in cooperation with Cornell University’s Dept. of Horticulture and the Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The instrument has an array of LED lights that can emit the exact spectra of light necessary to grow plants while excluding all other spectral bands.
AeroFarms has an aeroponic controlled environment production system for leafy greens that produces crops year-round using artificial light. The new testing equipment will be able to control spectral bands, intensity and exposure duration to determine impact and yield and quality of leafy green vegetables grown by AeroFarms.
