At the request of the Connecticut state government, the Connecticut Greenhouse Growers Association has been collecting snow damage reports. CGGA said that at least 200 greenhouse structures so far have collapsed from the weight of this year’s snow storms. All types of structures, including gutter-connected, hoop houses, retail greenhouses and overwintering houses, have been damaged.
Damage has exceeded $1 million. The association said most of the structures were not insured. Not yet determined is how many plants in those structures will survive.
USDA has available some disaster assistance, but affected greenhouse operators must contact the closest Farm Service Agency within 30 days of the loss. The association said the state agriculture department and Governor Mallow may seek additional federal aid. Companies should report their losses to CGGA.
