D.S. Cole Growers in Loudon, N.H., was the first MPS-ABC certified greenhouse growing operation in the U.S. In its efforts to expand its sustainable activities the company has chosen to pursue certification to MPS-GAP (Good Agricultural Practices).
Owner Doug Cole said certifying with MPS-GAP was the next step in making his company more susceptible, including instituting an emergency evacuation plan and training staff members in CPR.
Cole said that unlike mainstream agriculture, horticulture has not received the same level of scrutiny by the press. He said by showing that growers are actively supporting sustainable activities can help avoid bad publicity issues in the future. He said the MPS program is a positive step toward providing a healthy environment for his company’s employees and for promoting its product to the public.
