When designing perennial combinations that appeal at retail, it pays to keep tried-and-true design principles in mind. Follow these tips to create combos that will finish with ease in the greenhouse and transition seamlessly to the garden center.
1. Combine colors.
Stick to classic color theory when selecting color. Monochromatic schemes feature varied hues of a single color. Complementary schemes pair colors opposite on the color wheel – yellow and purple are a no-fail choice. Analogous schemes combine colors next to each other on the color wheel, like yellow and orange.
2. Consider flower form.
The most appealing gardens showcase a wide array of flower forms, creating distinction between elements. Try a trio featuring the spike-like flowers of Salvia and the delicate, airy blossoms of Coreopsis alongside the bold, daisy-like blooms of a Leucanthemum.
3. Timing is everything.
To ensure flexibility when it’s time to pot up the combinations, consider ordering a wide array of plant material that has been trial-tested to bloom at the same time, like the perennial mix-and-match collection from Dümmen Orange. This will ensure combinations are in full bloom, packed with color and retail appeal!
4. Inspire at retail.
Perennial combinations are a great way to duplicate the color that annuals offer, but with the value-added appeal of hardiness and longevity. Communicate this message to customers with signage that educates when and how to divide the plants. This easy project ensures enjoyment for years to come.
5. Cater to DIYers.
Alongside the finished planters, offer a selection of quart perennials, planters and potting media. Those itching to get their hands dirty will be inspired by the pre-finished combinations as they perfect their own perennial creations. This is a great in-store project for families!
