The lily now has its own event: Dutch Lily Days. 15 Dutch lily breeders and bulb exporters, which previously held different events, will open their doors May 24-28 to give visitors an opportunity to view their entire product assortment collectively.
The goal of the event is to give a better impression of today’s current commercial assortment as well as tomorrow’s varieties that are still in the hybridizers’ greenhouses.
Previously, most open houses were held in conjunction with the last 10 days of Keukenhof’s Lily Parade. Because of long forcing time of some cultivars, not all varieties would be in bloom during that time. By moving the open houses to the last week of May, a better representation of the total lily assortment can now be given.
“The Keukenhof show will remain a very important event in the international lily market and will be remaining to be supported by several companies in the lily industry,” said Hans Onings at Onings Holland, one of the participating companies. “The big advantage of Dutch Lily Days is that we offer our international customers the possibility to see a broad selection of varieties by visiting multiple companies”.
Because the Netherlands has a strong position as a lily hybridizer (95% of lilies originate there), event organizers expect many foreign visitors, not only from Europe, but also from Japan, China, Taiwan, North and South America.
