Coen Haakman, a cut tulip grower who started Fresh Tulips USA in Stevensburg, Va., in 2004, has seen his operation expand to become one of the world’s largest producers, reports Voice of America News. The 430,000 sq. ft. hydroponic greenhouse operation produces about 400,000 tulip stems daily. Haakman, who immigrated from the Netherlands, said when he started the business his original goal was to sell about 5 million stems annually. The company produced 5-6 million stems just for Mother’s Day.
