George Sant & Sons Ltd. in Kleinburg, Ontario, recently began the MPS-ABC environmental certification program. Co-owner Ron Sant said the program brings together all of the employees into understanding the organization’s goals and brings better participation to the goals.
“We have recycled plastic and cardboard for years, but now we are finding that we are recycling so much more that we purchased a cardboard compactor to manage the volume of our recycling,” said Sant. “Everyone is involved in the process.”
Sant said the certification process has led to good discussions among key members of the team. They are looking for ways to make changes to growing practices that are both good for the environment and for the employees responsible for applying crop protection products and fertilizers.
Prior to beginning the MPS program the company was focused on energy use to control costs. Information is now being recorded every four weeks, which is enabling the company to look at and consider additional inputs.
Canadian growers are using a metric based measurement system for MPS while U.S. growers are making measurements in liquid ounces and pounds.
