American Hosta Growers Assoc. has selected 'First Frost' as its 2010 Hosta of the Year. 'First Frost’ is a frosty white-edged sport of ‘Halcyon’. Blue leaves emerge with a wide margin. The leaves turn pure white if grown in a ½ day of bright light. Lavender flowers bloom in July. It has excellent color and substance, and will look unblemished in the garden until first frost.
The association established the Hosta of the Year in 1996 to address concerns from growers and gardeners about selecting the right hostas for their sales areas and gardens. Plants are voted on by association members. Award winners are good garden plants in all a regions of the country, are widely available and in sufficient supply and retail for about $15 in the year of selection.
