Keep plants under control in combos

To manage varying growth rates of different species planted in mixed containers, it may be best to treat individual plants before they are combined.

Rich McAvoy, horticulture professor and extension specialist at University of Connecticut, recommends pretreating transplants as needed with a plug dip by setting plug flats into a tray of PGR solution. This allows the rooting medium to soak up the chemical. Only use root-active PGRs for this purpose. These chemicals remain active in the root zone for months and they tend not to migrate far from the treated medium.

For plants that need to be treated with Florel to increase branching, the best option, again, is to treat the plants separately.
