Lambert Peat Moss Company is pleased to be celebrating its 90th anniversary of premium peat moss production. Now with four generations in the business, Lambert still operates from the original location, along with a number of additional peat bogs.
“My grandfather helped pioneer the development of peat moss production in North America, and our family carries on his legacy today,” says Gabe Lambert, president. “Our aim continues to be producing the finest quality products while being a steward of the environment.”
Founded in 1928 by Francois Xavier Lambert to produce screened and bagged peat moss, the company’s main location remains in Rivière-Ouelle, Québec, along the south shore of the St. Lawrence River, and they have expanded to several bogs along the north shore and near Lac St-Jean in the interior of Québec. The company has built an extensive distribution network to supply distributors and commercial users throughout Canada, the United States and Mexico. They also export products worldwide via container shipments to South & Central America, the Caribbean, Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
Since day one, quality has always been a priority at Lambert, and they maintain a complete in-house quality control laboratory. To comply with chemical standards, they sample products to analyze for pH, EC and S.M.E.; analyze particle size distribution, porosity and moisture content; regularly measure bag yield and firmness; and conduct random greenhouse tests to evaluate product performance.
Lambert proudly holds the VeriFlora – Certified Peatland Products certification for responsible peatland management, the industry’s most important standard which signifies a commitment to ongoing improvement substrate production for horticultural growth and sustainable practices.
Today, several generations of Lamberts contribute to the company’s success. In addition to Gabe, his sons Martin, Jerome, Francois and Alexandre and his daughter Marie-Gabrielle are active in the company.
