Majority of Americans say keep new health care law

Post-election survey shows 51% of voters approve of law

A post-election McClatchy-Marist survey of registered voters found that a majority of Americans want to keep the new 2010 health care law or want the law expanded. The survey of 1,020 adults was conducted Nov. 15-18. 51% of those surveyed want to keep the law or change it to do more. 44% said they wanted to change the law so that it would do less or they wanted to repeal it altogether. 65% of the survey respondents said the law’s mandate requiring every American to buy insurance was unconstitutional, while 29% said the mandate should be kept.
McClatchy Newspapers reports that voters by margins of 2-1 or greater want to keep some of the most familiar benefits, such as preventing insurers from denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.
