Metrolina Greenhouses Inc. in Huntersville, N.C., has made a request to the Huntersville Board of Commissioners asking the town to rezone about 133 acres of land. Approval of the request would allow the wholesale grower to expand its production facilities by about 1.5 million sq. ft., reports the Charlotte Observer.
The Huntersville Board of Commissioners held a public hearing on the company's request on Nov. 1. The newspaper said the Huntersville Planning Board would consider and make recommendations on the request at its Nov. 16 meeting. The request is scheduled to go before the Huntersville Board of Commissioners to consider approval Dec. 20.
The company is looking to complete the grading of the land by the end of 2011 with construction to start in either in 2011 or 2012, depending on market conditions, according to the newspaper. The expansion is expected to add 35 jobs.
Metrolina Greenhouses operates 150 acres of greenhouses and about 30 acres of outdoor growing space. It ships to big-box retailers, mass merchandisers, home improvement and grocery chains and other greenhouses.
