When the Botanical Research Institute of Texas opens its new $48 million building in Fort Worth in May 2011, the 69,000 sq. ft. facility will include a living roof. 6,000 trays are being installed on the roof to hold 30,000 plants of 40 species from the Fort Worth area, reports NBCDFW.
The trays, which are made from coco fiber, are biodegradable, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The roof, which is at a 9.5 degree angle facing south, will help to keep the building cooler and will reduce the amount of storm water runoff.
