USDA has listed 6,132 operational farmers markets in the 2010 National Farmers Market Directory, representing a 16% increase over 2009, when the agency reported 5,274. The top 10 states with the most farmers markets are: Calif. (580), N.Y. (461), Ill. (286), Mich. (271), Iowa (229), Mass. (227), Ohio (213), Wisc. (204), Penn. (203) and N.C. (182). The top 10 states that saw the greatest increase in the number of farmers markets by percentage from 2009 to 2010 are: Mo. (77%), Minn. (61%), Idaho (60%), Mich. (60%), Ind. (47%), S.D. (46%), Ark. (41%), Wash. (37%), Ohio (36%) and Okla. (31%).
