Plainview Growers in Pompton Plains, N.J., is now offering Blue Diamond orchids, which the grower is producing year-round. PR Newswire reports Plainview is working with a Dutch partner to produce the blue flowers using Taiwanese orchids. Plants, which have a high bud count, are treated through a patented process that pulls blue tones throughout the white flowers. The flowers retain the color, which does not bleed or leech. As the orchid matures, the vibrant blues cascade into softer azure tones as new buds grow down the spine of the plant.
Plainview sales manager Jack Olson said the process being used by Plainview is the same being used by Silver Vase in Homestead, Fla., to produce its Blue Mystique orchids. He said Plainview and Silver Vase are the only two U.S. growers licensed by the patent holder to use the process. Olson said the basic difference between the two is Plainview uses Taiwanese orchids and Silver Vase uses Dutch orchids so there is some difference in flower size and habit.
