T. Mularski Horticulture Farm is developing Europe’s largest greenhouse tomato operation near the city of Opole in southwestern Poland, according to Polish Market Online. Gazeta Wyborcza Opole reports the greenhouses will cover about 247 acres, cost approximately $91.5 million and will employ over 1,000 people. Mularski currently operates over 128 acres of greenhouses in several locations in Poland.
The greenhouses will be heated with steam, which is a byproduct of the Opole power station. The grower will purchase tanks of carbon dioxide to supplement the greenhouse environment from chemical plants in the Polish towns of Kedzierzyn-Kozle and Pulawy. The chemical plants use gas boilers which enable them to capture and treat carbon dioxide. The Opole power station is equipped with coal-fired boilers and is unable to capture carbon dioxide.
