The Greenhouse*A*Syst document has been revised and is now available online to greenhouse growers. The 52-page document is a self-assessment tool for growers to identify pollution risks and to help make needed improvements to protect water resources. It also can improve growers’ awareness of state and federal environmental regulations.
The document was revised based on Michigan’s new groundwater withdrawal regulations. It features a water withdrawal assessment tool and new or increased large quantity water withdrawal registration with the Mich. Dept. of Agriculture. In addition, the document has been revised to include:
* Clarification of on-farm fueling station requirements.
* New pesticide storage and container recommendations (not requirements).
* Minor Mich. Water Stewardship Program updates.
Growers can also use this tool to become environmentally assured through the Mich. Agriculture Environmental Assurance Program. Once Michigan growers develop and implement a plan to address the risks indicated by the assessment, they can contact Mich. Dept. of Agriculture to request greenhouse system verification.
