24 Colombian flower farms are providing 40,000 flowers for the June 19th wedding of Princess Victoria of Sweden to entrepreneur Daniel Westling in Stockholm. All of the Colombian flowers that will be used for arrangements, bouquets and decorations have earned the Florverde certification label. Florverde is an independent certification process that ensures strict socio-environmental standards for flower production.
Augusto Solano, president of the Association of Colombia Flower Exporters (Asocolflores), said Colombia is the 2nd largest flower exporter worldwide and the leading exporter to the U.S. Total export sales to the U.S.in 2009 was $1.05 billion. Colombian growers, who produce 1,600 different flower varieties, exported over 1.3 billion flowers worldwide in 2009.
