Terra Nova Nurseries has bred six new heucherella cultivars, all rust-resistant.
"Heuchera rust, Puccinia heucherae, spreads by both air and water and is present in virtually every corner of the world where heuchera and heucherella grow,” says Chuck Pavlich, director of new product development for Terra Nova Nurseries.
Heucheras and heucherella are most susceptible to rust infection outdoors during a cool, moist spring, or anytime there is overhead watering in greenhouses. Having wet foliage through the afternoon and evening is a surefire way of inviting heuchera rust to proliferate in greenhouses, according to Pavlich.
Through extensive plant trials, the company’s heucherella cultivars have proven to be rust-resistant in both greenhouse and garden settings.
The six new rust-resistant cultivars include Heucherella ‘Gold Cascade’ and Heucherella ‘Copper Cascade’, both of which are part of the company’s brand new Cascade™ series. Also new, Heucherella ‘Twilight’ is a stand-alone variety bred for its vigorous habit and low-maintenance characteristics.
A new addition to Terra Nova Nurseries’ existing Falls™ series is Heucherella ‘Glacier Falls’, rounding out the collection to a total of four varieties. Heucherella ‘Fire Frost’ and Heucherella ‘Honey Rose’ are two new varieties that are part of the company’s current licensing agreement with Blooms of Bressingham.
