Home gardeners in the United Kingdom are impacting sales of organic producers and retailers. The Guardian reports that organic growers and retailers that provide weekly delivery of seasonal produce have seen a drop in demand during the last year. The reason is that more consumers are trying vegetable gardening. A spokesperson for Abel & Cole, which is one of the biggest retailers of vegetables, told the newspaper that it was a tough spring and summer due to more people growing their own seasonal produce. People were still buying the vegetables that they were not producing themselves. Other retailers said the recession has impacted organic sales by causing consumers to cut back on their spending, choosing to make only occasional purchases.
