Unauthorized immigrant population in the U.S. remains unchanged

Pew Hispanic Center estimates unauthorized immigrant population at 11.2 million people


As of March 2010, 11.2 million unauthorized immigrants were living in the U.S., nearly unchanged from 2009, according to estimates from the Pew Hispanic Center. The unchanged estimate follows a 2-year decline from a peak of 12 million in 2007 to 11.1 million in 2009. This was the first significant reversal in a 2-decade pattern of growth. Unauthorized immigrants accounted for 3.7% of the country’s population in 2010.

The number of unauthorized immigrants in the workforce decreased from a peak of 8.4 million in 2007. These immigrants made up 5.2% of the labor force in 2010.
