Mark Gauger at Maple View Farm in Harwinton, Conn., is looking for a few good crops—for winter production. The Republican American reports Gauger, like a growing number of farmers, is extending his production season in unheated greenhouses. As consumer demand for locally-grown produce increases, growers are working to identify those crops that tolerate lower light levels and will grow as long as the soil is warm.
Gauger has had some success selling crops at a farmers market in Litchfield, Conn. The paper said Gauger and other members of the Northwest Family Farm Cooperative are planning to extend farmers market sales next year beyond the end of October.
