Young's Plant Farm receives MPS-A qualification

The rating is based on superior sustainability practices such as water conservation and efficient greenhouse systems.

Young's Plant Farm of Auburn, Ala. has received an MPS-A sustainability qualification, MPS announced on March 3. The family-owned and operated business contains 1.5 million square feet of greenhouse growing space that was measured through the MPS-ABC certification for its sustainability processes.

Examples of the sustainable efforts implemented are:
•                    Waste water retention and reuse
•                    Growing with energy efficient greenhouse systems
•                    Using renewable Whole Tree Substrate as growing media

Drew Young explained it is Young’s responsibility to produce the most economically friendly product possible. He said that as a grower, serving large scale retailers but also independent garden centers, it has been encouraging to receive the positive feedback from customers as they share the fact that we are participating in a sustainability program such as MPS-ABC.

As customers become more aware other colleagues and the industry in general must think about the topic of sustainability, according to MPS. "The floriculture industry is consistently striving to develop production methods and processes beneficial for the environment and ultimately the consumer. Achieving MPS certifications as an industry will help strengthen and maintain producers’ awareness of their processes," Young said.
